Booming Main Street

Subject

History--Sterling, Kansas

Description

Sterling's best years of trade were probably between 1890 to 1910. Every building on Broadway was filled. This photo is of the main street in 1905. The buildings on the extreme left are the Bumham building, and Forney Furniture and Undertaking, with the hospital upstairs. Next is the telephone company, followed by Porter Brothers Implement Company. The large two-story building is the Pearson Furniture and Undertaking. This is followed by the Farmers State Bank, the Dillon grocery store and the First National Bank. Across the street is Citizen's State Bank. The large 50-foot, two-story building on the right is the Goodson Opera House with George Morris Hardware underneath. It is followed by the Bulletin's competitor, the Sterling Journal, and the Bulletin in its old location. Greenlee's Grocery and Bakery was on the corner.
