Description
The last of Sterling's true pioneers, A.L. McMuphy was a Civil War veteran who first came to Rice County in 1871, even before the County was organized. As was his custom Mr. Mac always rode his horse on his birthday. He is shown here on November 20, 1946, celebrating his 100th birthday. At the time he was one of two remaining Civil War veterans in Kansas, and was the Commander of the Kansas Department, Grand Army of the Republic. He joined the 7th Indiana Cavalry at the age of 15 and participated in 12 engagements, including Mine Creek near Pleasanton, the only battle fought on Kansas. Horses were always a part of his life. His first job in Sterling was as an owner of McMurphy and Hughes Livery Stable at the rear of the Green Mountain House Hotel (now the Dillon lot). He became a wealthy landowner and was one of the original directors of the First National Bank.
