History--Sterling, Kansas

Description

The vacant lot at the corner of Fifth and Monroe was the once the location of the Congregational Church, built in 1874, and was the first church edifice in not only Sterling (Peace) but Rice County as well. The original structure included only the part with the tall windows, and faced east. Once the town's leading church, its membership included most of the key businessmen. The congregation thrived for 50 years, but fell on hard times and was disbanded in 1925. The building was later purchased by the Christian Science denomination which held meetings there until 1952, when it was sold to the Calvary Baptists. It was torn down when the Baptists moved to the old Methodist Church building on West Main in 1960.
